FULHAM, IN FURNESS

Sprayed on the wall of the Astra Cinema, Barrow In Furness on August 30 1969, this would have been seen by everyone who  headed up Holker Street to Barrow Soccer until the cinema came down in 2003.
I photographed a lot of Barrow graffiti in the 90's. There were lots about the poll tax. They were landmarks; everyone knew of something, somewhere that was worth recording.
I asked Fulham FC's fansite if anyone knew who painted this one on the occasion of Fulham's only visit to Barrow (so far..) in the old Third division, 51 years ago.

These three Emails are from Frank..

I may be the graffiti artist concerned I remember going to that game and it might be my handiwork, we come overnight from London arriving at about 6 o’clock in the morning so we had best part of 9 hours to kill before the game, it’s all a bit vague but I’m pretty sure they was some Fulham graffiti up by the ground as well, as to the game I knew we lost 3-1 but can remember anything about the game, I do remember falling asleep in the second half it had been such a long day and night, as to the graffiti our next away game was Bristol Rovers we sprayed Fulham on a white wall outside a bus garage, they might be some others but it’s all very vague as it been such  a long time

...Nice that my vague recollections are good for you!!! I just looked up the attendance for that was 5665, was that the average for that season? I at the time was in my first job I was as a compositor for a rubber stamp firm, setting up type to be moulded into rubber stamps,
I lived in roehampton a bus ride away from Fulham, that’s not bad attendance for the conference, I suppose the town is full of exiled Mancs and scousers!! I’ve had a season ticket for the last 20 odd years, don’t do many away games, especially not in the premiership only new ground like the emirates and the London stadium, .went to Turin and Hamburg for the final during the europa league run and the playoff final in 2018

...I think a lot of my memories of that game are lost in the mist of time, I travelled to the game with  a best mate that introduced to the love of Fulham about 4 years previous, I was 16 when we went to Barrow, I think we left Euston about 10 o’clock the previous night, I unfortunately can’t remember what we did in the time before the game, maybe that why the graffiti came thro sheer boredom, as I said in the original post I’m pretty sure there some by the ground as well, I seem to recall there was quite a lot of Fulham there, it’s that new ground bug that supporters seem to have, unfortunately my memories are all a bit vague, don’t recall the return journey at all, I probably slept all the way!! It probably stayed in my memory because I came to Barrow once, we as over the years you go to the same grounds over and over again, do you think your ever get back in the football league? In the 50 years since that game we’ve had a cup final a European final lots of relegation lots of promotions hope your season goes well here’s hoping for another promotion this season for you and us!!
